Evo X CZ4A Floor Mats: What Fits, and Why the CJ Lancer Shares Them
The Evolution X is the odd one out in the Evo family, and not for the reasons people usually bring up. Forget the engine swap and the twin clutch box for a moment. The thing that catches owners out when they go shopping for interior parts is the floorpan. CZ4A shares its carpet with a car most Evo owners would never think to check: the ordinary CJ Lancer sitting in the next row at the shops.
That one fact decides what fits and what does not. Here is the whole picture, chassis code by chassis code.
What chassis code is my Evo?
Mitsubishi never made this easy. The marketing name and the chassis code drifted apart over the years, so the badge on the boot tells you less than you would hope. This is the mapping that matters for interior fitment:
- CN9A is the Evolution 4
- CP9A covers the Evolution 5, Evolution 6 and Evolution 6.5 TME
- CT9A covers the Evolution 7, Evolution 8 and Evolution 9
- CT9W is the Evolution 9 Wagon, a different shell again
- CZ4A is the Evolution X, built 2007 to 2014
Notice how the groupings do not line up with the generation numbers. Evo 5 and Evo 6 look quite different from each other but sit on the same code, so they take the same mats. Evo 6.5 and Evo 7 look like near neighbours and take different ones. If you shop by the number on the badge you will get this wrong roughly half the time.
The difference is easy to see side by side. Below, the CN9A and CP9A pattern on the left of your screen, the CT9A pattern below it. Neither will sit correctly in a CZ4A.
Why the CZ4A stands apart
Every Evo up to the Evo 9 was a heavily reworked version of a Lancer that had already been designed. The Evolution X arrived on a genuinely new platform, with the 4G63 finally retired in favour of the 4B11T, and a wider, longer body underneath. The interior was redrawn along with everything else.
None of the earlier mat patterns carry across. A CT9A set placed in a CZ4A will sit wrong at the transmission tunnel and leave the heel area exposed, which is exactly where a mat earns its keep. There is no clever trimming fix. The shape is simply different.
The CJ Lancer connection
Here is the part that surprises people. The 2007 to 2014 CJ series Lancer, the regular car, uses the same carpet as the Evolution X. Not a similar one. The same one.
Two practical consequences follow. If you drive a CJ Lancer, the Evo X mat set fits your car, and you are buying a pattern developed for the flagship. If you drive an Evo X and someone offers you mats listed for a CJ Lancer, that is not a mismatch to be nervous about.
What does not transfer is anything outside that window. Lancers before 2007 and after 2014 are different cars underneath, whatever the badge says.

Left hand drive and right hand drive
The Evolution X went to more markets than any Evo before it, which means a lot of these cars are left hand drive. The driver mat and its heel pad are mirrored between the two layouts, so this is not a detail you can ignore and sort out later.
Choose your driving position at checkout and the set is made to suit. Same price either way.
What the mats are made of
The checker pattern is the recognisable part, but the construction underneath is what decides whether a mat lasts.
- High low loop carpet. Two pile heights woven together, which is what creates the checker relief rather than it being printed on.
- Nylon heel pad on the driver mat. Heel wear is concentrated in one small patch, and carpet on its own does not survive it. The pad goes exactly where your heel pivots.
- Rubber nipple backing and velcro strips. The backing grips the factory carpet. The velcro adds friction so the mat does not creep forward under braking, which on a car like this matters more than it does on most.
- Cut and bound by hand. Each set is made rather than stamped out.
The heel pad is the part worth looking at closely. It is the difference between a mat that still looks right after three years and one that wears through in the same spot every driver wears through.
Each mat carries a factory style fixing eyelet so it locates on the car's own retaining hooks rather than floating loose.
Looking after them
Vacuum regularly and they will hold their look for years. For a deeper clean, use a soft carpet brush with mild detergent, then let them dry completely before they go back in. Do not put them through a washing machine. The backing does not appreciate it.
What about a cover for an Evo X?
