Subaru GD and GG Chassis Codes: Which Floor Mats Actually Fit
Ask a Subaru owner what car they have and you will get a nickname. Bugeye. Blobeye. Hawkeye. Ask them for the chassis code and the room goes quiet.
That gap causes real problems when you buy interior parts. The nickname describes the headlights. The chassis code describes the floor. For anything that has to sit inside the car, only the second one matters, and the good news is that it is simpler than the nicknames suggest.
The short version
For the 2000 to 2007 Impreza, two letters do all the work:
- GD is the four door sedan
- GG is the five door wagon
Everything after that is trim. The third letter tells you the engine and model, not the shell:
- GDA is the WRX sedan
- GDB is the WRX STI sedan, the one most people picture
- GGA is the WRX wagon
- GGB is the STI wagon
- GD2, GD3, GD9 are naturally aspirated sedans
- GG2, GG3, GG9 are naturally aspirated wagons
If you are shopping for floor mats, that list collapses to one question: sedan or wagon, and even that matters less than you would think, because the front footwells are identical across the whole generation.
Where the nicknames fit
The three faces are facelifts of one car. Same platform underneath, same floorpan, different headlights.
- Bugeye, 2001 to 2002
- Blobeye, 2003 to 2005
- Hawkeye, 2006 to 2007
One trap for readers in North America. Subaru brought this generation to the US a year later than Japan and Australia, so American model years run roughly twelve months behind the ones above. A car sold as a 2002 in the States is a Bugeye. If you are in the US and the years look off by one, that is why, and it does not change which mats fit.
None of the three facelifts changed the carpet. A Bugeye set fits a Hawkeye.
What actually decides fitment
Three things, in order:
- Generation. GC8 to GD is a whole new shell. Nothing carries over.
- Driving position. The driver mat and its heel pad are mirrored between left and right hand drive. This is the one people forget.
- Body style. Sedan and wagon differ in the boot, not the footwells.
Notice what is not on that list: engine, turbo or not, STI or base. An Impreza RS has the same floor as an STI. That surprises people who assume the flagship got special treatment inside. It did not.

The generation before: GC8
If your Impreza is 1992 to 2000, you have a GC8, and none of the above applies. Different shell, different mats. That car has its own GC8 checker set.
The Forester nobody expects
Here is where people guess wrong. The SG Forester, 2002 to 2007, shares an era with the GD Impreza and shares plenty of mechanical parts with it. The floor is not one of them.
The Forester is a taller body on its own pan. An Impreza mat set will not sit correctly in one. The turbocharged cars, SG5 for the Forester XT and SG9 for the Forester STI, take their own SG checker set.

Why checker, and what is underneath
The checker pattern is a JDM interior signature that dates back to Japanese tuning shops fitting rally inspired carpet to street cars. The look is the reason people buy it. The construction is the reason it lasts.
- High low loop carpet. Two pile heights woven together, so the checker is a relief you can feel, not a print that fades.
- Nylon heel pad on the driver mat. Heel wear happens in one small patch. Carpet alone does not survive it.
- Rubber nipple backing and velcro strips. Keeps the mat from creeping toward the pedals.
- Cut and bound by hand. Made to the shape, not stamped from a universal blank.
Matching cover
If the car lives indoors between drives, there is a GDB and GDA indoor cover cut for the same generation, and a GC8 version for the older shell.
